Reynolds Park - Water Utility Building Rooftop Lighting

Last Updated: 08/17/2020

Construction on this project is currently underway and anticipated to be complete in mid June, 2020.

The City of Madison will be adding four, 25-foot high security lights to the rooftop of the existing water utility building located adjacent to Reynolds Park. These lights will be installed near the bike polo courts. This project will also include installation of lighting on the exterior staircase of the building.

The rooftop security lighting will be programed to turn on when activated for recreation use after dusk, and shut off when the park closes at 10 pm.

The rooftop of this building is jointly operated by Madison Parks and Madison Water Utility as a recreational facility offering bike polo, and tennis courts with a SportsCourt surfacing.

The City of Madison held two public meetings to present the below options for adding lights to the rooftop of the existing water utility building adjacent to Reynolds Park. At these meetings, and in subsequent emails there was mixed reaction regarding the proposed lighting options.

Option One - Security Lighting Option Two - Athletic Lighting
Number of Poles 10 4
Number of Light Fixtures per Pole 1 5
Pole Height 25 feet 50 feet
Average Foot Candles 6 30 (IESNA Standards for Recreational Tennis)

The proposed lighting configuration will include installing only 4 security light poles near the bike polo area, along with an exterior staircase light and potential infrastructure for future security lighting near the tennis courts.

Timing for construction of this project will be determined later this year, after the 2020 budget has been approved.
