Penn Park Shelter Renovation Project

Penn Park Shelter Renovation Project
The renovated shelter at Penn Park opened in May 2018!

In addition to the renovation of the existing park shelter, other park improvements include: the addition of a new restroom/concession building, a new parking lot and walking path, improvements to the athletic field and new landscaping.

Staring in May of 2015 the Parks Division held a series of public meetings to gather neighborhood input and help guide the design process. The project's original intent was to completely remove and replace the existing shelter, but through the neighborhood's review, it became clear the existing shelter's large canopy (over 4,000 sf of covered area) was a valued asset for larger community events. Based on this direction, the construction project will renovate the existing shelter as a large, free-standing, open-air canopied space and a separate, concession/restroom building will be built. The shelter renovation will create a more open and welcoming space and the new concession/restroom building will be conveniently located for both shelter and athletic field events.

Below are the presentation materials and meeting notes from the neighborhood review process.

A fourth public input meeting was held on January 19th, 2017. Topics included the City of Madison Urban Design Commission's review of the proposed changes to the existing shelter, the design and location of the new concession/restroom building and the proposed parking lot and other site improvements.
